Bronchiectasis

Evidence-based information to help you understand your condition.

Bronchiectasis is a long-term condition affecting the airways in your lungs. The airways become widened and damaged, making it harder for them to clear away mucus. This leads to a buildup of mucus in the airways.

As a result, you may have a persistent cough, produce large amounts of phlegm, and be more prone to chest infections. These infections can further damage the airways and worsen the condition.

Symptoms may include a persistent cough that produces sputum (phlegm), shortness of breath, chest pain, and recurrent infections. Early diagnosis and treatment can help slow the progression of the condition and improve quality of life.
