Good breathing
Evidence-based information to help you understand your condition.
Breathing pattern dysfunction and inefficient breathing can contribute to persistent breathlessness, chest tightness, cough and a sensation of not getting a satisfying breath.
This can sometimes occur even when lung function tests or scans are relatively reassuring. Stress, anxiety, chronic respiratory symptoms, previous chest infections and habitual upper chest breathing can all contribute to inefficient breathing patterns.
This video introduces simple breathing techniques that may help promote calmer, slower and more efficient breathing. The aim is to encourage relaxed diaphragmatic breathing and reduce unnecessary muscle tension.
These exercises are intended as general educational guidance and should not replace personalised medical assessment or treatment. If breathing exercises worsen your symptoms, please stop and seek appropriate medical advice.
