Hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis)
Evidence-based information to help you understand your condition.
Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. It occurs at certain times of the year when pollen levels are high.
Symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, and throat irritation. While hay fever is not dangerous, it can significantly affect quality of life and sleep.
Most people can manage hay fever symptoms with antihistamines, nasal sprays, and by minimizing exposure to pollen. If you have asthma, hay fever can make your asthma symptoms worse.
