Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
Evidence-based information to help you understand your condition.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses occur when the muscles in the throat relax excessively, blocking the airway.
Symptoms include loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, and difficulty concentrating. OSA can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke if left untreated.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy is an effective treatment that keeps the airway open during sleep. Other lifestyle changes and treatments may also help manage the condition.
