A pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious condition where a blood clot travels to the lungs and blocks a blood vessel. This can restrict blood flow and oxygen levels, which can be life-threatening.
Symptoms include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, rapid heart rate, and coughing up blood. A PE is a medical emergency requiring immediate hospital treatment.
Risk factors include prolonged immobility, recent surgery, cancer, heart disease, and a personal or family history of blood clots. If you suspect a PE, seek emergency medical care immediately.
