Pulmonary fibrosis

Evidence-based information to help you understand your condition.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a general term for scarring of the lung tissue. When lung tissue becomes scarred, it thickens and becomes stiff, making it harder to breathe and for oxygen to pass into the bloodstream.

There are many types of pulmonary fibrosis, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) where the cause is unknown. Others may be associated with autoimmune conditions, occupational exposure, or medications.

Symptoms include progressive shortness of breath, a persistent dry cough, fatigue, and chest discomfort. Specialist assessment can help identify the type of fibrosis and determine the best management approach.
